David Whittaker's 'The Hovering' Wins £10000, 1st Prize at the National Open Art Competition

David Whittaker's 'The Hovering' has been announced the winner of the 1st prize Towry Award at The National Open Art Competition.

'The Hovering' was winner of the £10000 first prize ahead of 2400 applicants for the National Open. This is emphatic recognition of Whittaker's rising acclaim.

Now in its 15^th year the NOAC attracts artists across the UK, from the emerging to the established.

The exhibition is now open to the public and continues until 29th December, at The Minerva Theatre, Chichester.

'The Hovering' will then be exhibited at Pallant House, Chichester from 3rd January 2012.

Sam Bassett & David Whittaker selected for the National Open Art Competition

Sam Bassett's 'Cold Man Lay Down Drunk' and David Whittaker's 'The Hovering' have both been selected for the National Open Art Competition Exhibition in Chichester. The works were selected from over 2000 submissions.

Judges for this years exhibition were artist Gavin Turk, Catherine Lampert former Director of The Whitechapel, artist Lisa Wright and critic Francis Hodgson.

The exhibition previews on Saturday 10th December at The Minerva Theatre, Chichester.

There are £40,000 worth of prizes, which will be announced at the opening.

Simon Allen's carved wood, gilded wall sculptures acquired by The World Gold Council

Metamporphosis I, II, III, IV and Hellios by Simon Allen have gone in The World Gold Council's collection. This is a major acquisition of works that will be displayed in Washington, USA.

Allen has also been invited to give a lecture on the significance of the use of the element within his practice at The World Gold Council's London headquarters.

The Midas Awards 2011 - Winner: Alastair Barford

The Midas Award 2011 opened at Millennium on Friday 11th November. The opening was an extraordinary success with the gallery attracting in excess of 300 people.

The shortlisted artists who's work can be seen at Millennium until 29th November are: Alastair Barford; Susan Clarke; Clare Flawn; Andrew Gomez; Zoe Koperski; and Emily Platzer. This years winner is Alastair Barford who will receive a year’s supply of art materials and access to facilities to the value of £1500 and a solo show at Newlyn Art Gallery in the autumn of 2012.

Now in its sixth year, the Midas Award is an initiative between Midas Construction, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Millennium and UCF to help emerging artists enter the professional contemporary art world, while providing opportunities for their work to be seen by audiences within the region and beyond.

The judges for this years award were: Martin Walton, Business Development Manager and Keith Hosen, Project Director from Midas Construction; Joseph Clarke, Director of Millennium Gallery, St Ives; James Green, Director, and Blair Todd, Director and Exhibitions Manager, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange; Sara Black, Director, ProjectBase; and Jeremy Diggle, Dean of the School of Art & Design, UCF.

Millennium Artists at the Discerning Eye

The Discerning Eye opened on 10th November.

Lisa Wright was one of the selectors for this years exhibition alongside Brian Sewell, Eileen Cooper RA, Ossian Ward and collectors John Deston and John Pluthero.

Millennium artists who's work can be viewed are Mark Surridge, Michael Sandle, Naomi Frears, Amanda Williams Lucas, Tim Shaw, David Whittaker, Kate Walters and Melanie Miller.

Kate Walters wins 'Best Newcomer' at the RWA

Kate Walters has been awarded the 'best newcomer' at the RWA 's 159th Autumn Mixed Exhibition. It is the first time that Walters has submitted work to be shown at the RWA. Her painting 'What is in my Heart' will be on display during the exhibition.

The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal Academies of Art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for over 150 years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries and permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its patron.

Marcelle Hanselaar's 'Self Portrait with Exploding Chest' shortlisted for the Ruth Borchard Prize and also been acquired for that collection

Marcelle Hanselaar's 'Self Portrait with Exploding Chest' was recently shortlisted for the Ruth Borchard Prize. The painting has also been acquired for that collection.

Out of 508 entries, 173 works were selected for the exhibition at Kings Place Gallery. The judges, Rachel Borchard, Sister Wendy Beckett, Robert Travers, William Feaver and William Varley shortlisted works by Maggi Hambling, Marcelle Hanselaar, Celia Paul, Cherry Pickles, Fred Crayk and Mary Mabbutt.

Marcelle Hanselaar's 'Pillow Book for Endless Nights' wins a Brigit Skiöld Award at The Whitechapel Galleries 'London Art Book Fair'

'Pillow Book for Endless Nights' by Marcelle Hanselaar won a Birgit Skiöld Award at The London Art Book Fair held at The Whitechapel Gallery. A copy of the book has been purchased to go in to the collection of the V & A.

The panel included Richard Price, Head of Content and Research Stategy at The British Library, Elizabeth James, Senior Librarian at The National Art Library Collections at the V&A, Gill Saunders, Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A and Trust representatives Marc Balakjian and Victoria Bartlett.

Trevor Bell's 'Nona' - Purchased By John Lewis, Stratford

Trevor Bell's 'Nona', measuring 195 x 213 cm, has been acquired to adorn the Restaurant at the brand new John Lewis at Westfield Stratford City, the first John Lewis in London for 20 years.

The new Westfield development will be Europe's largest urban shopping centre with around 350 shops, bars and restaurants.

With its views of the Olympic park, the shop is a modern, four-storey landmark building, designed by award-winning architect Crispin Wride. It features a distinctive glazed 'prow' which overlooks the Westfield mall.

Poet and author Owen Sheers examines our changing relationship to the sea over the last four centuries and how this is reflected in the work of artists who have tried to capture its ever-changing essence in the stillness of a canvas, sculpture or photograph.

As an island nation the sea has exerted a powerful influence on some of Britain's best known artists. It has led to some of the finest British paintings from the likes of Constable and Turner and continues to be fertile territory for prominent artists today.

Sax Impey's forthcoming exhibition 'Storm' opens at Millennium on Friday 16th September.

In addition to being one of the judges for the 2011 National Open Art Competition, Lisa Wright has also been invited to be one of the selectors for this years Discerning Eye, alongside Artist - Eileen Cooper RA, Critics - Brian Sewell & Ossian Ward, and Collectors - John Pluthero & John Deston.

The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. Work is selected from open submission and from artists invited by the individual selectors. Each selector's section is hung separately giving the impression of six small exhibitions within the whole.

The exhibition provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names.

Tim Shaw's 'Drummer' was unveiled on Lemon Quay to a crowd of 4000. Roger Taylor, Drummer with the rock band Queen, unveiled the public sculpture after 100 Drummers converged in the centre of Truro 'drumming in' the unveiling. The event was an enormous success. The sculpture can be seen adorning Lemon Quay from this point forwards.

There is a good showing of Millennium artists at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition this year. The RA Summer Show runs from 7th June until 15th August, at The Royal Academy

Onya McCausland's 'Three Marks: Wall Painting' was featured on last nights Culture Show as one of the finalists for the Wollaston Award. We are, it goes without saying, extremely proud of Onya and this tremendous accolade and looking forward to her Millennium Solo exhibition in 2012.

Tim Shaw's 'Man on Fire: What God of Love Inspires Such Raging Hatred in the Hearts of Men' is also on display. It was selected by Brian Sewell as one of the top 10 exhibits of the exhibition in The Evening Standard Review of the exhibition.

Lisa Wright is exhibiting the monumental 'Girl Ascending'. A tour de force painting measuring 183 x 168 cm. Lisa Wright's first solo exhibition at Millennium; 'Walking Through Beautiful' on 19th August

Andrew Litten - works on paper at Venice Biennale and New York

Andrew Litten's 'Man with Dust and Dirt' (an envelope piece incorporating oil, dust and dirt) was recently on show at a works on paper exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Litten is also exhibiting 'Space, Light and Time with no Emotion' at an International mixed exhibition titled 'Book; at Oo Gallery in New York.

Litten's long awaited and much anticipated solo exhibition 'ID Smear' begins on 14th October.

Onya McCausland has been shortlisted for the Wollaston Award at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

We are delighted to announce that Onya McCausland has been shortlisted for the Wollaston Award at the Royal Academy for Three Marks/Wall Painting.

Previous winners of the Charles Wollaston Award include Yinka Shonibare (2010), Richard Wilson (2009), Jeff Koons (2008), Gavin Turk (2007), Jake and Dinos Chapman (2003), Alan Charlton (2002), Marc Quinn (2001), Gerard Hemsworth (2000) and David Hockney (1999)

The work will be on show at the Royal Academy until 15 August.

The Charles Wollaston Award is given to the ‘most distinguished work’ in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition.

The winner will be announced on The Culture Show, BBC 2, June 16, 7pm.
